History of Albanian Photografy (Shkodra Phototeque)

The art of photography in Albania originates in Shkoder  in the end of years 50 of the past century and is associated with the name of Pjetër Marubi (1834-1903). Among his earliest photographs are the ones of Hamzë Kazazi (1858) and of Leonardo de Martino (1859). The work over forty years of Pjetër Marubi as a photographer has left traces with historical and artistic values . Such are especially those that pertain period of Albanian League of Prizren . His photographs and drawings for the rebellion of Mirdita (1876-1877) were published in " La Guerra d' Oriente " and the ones for the Albanian League were published in various organs as " The Illustrated London News " , " Illustration " , etc. . Student of Pjetër Marubi was Mati Kodheli (1862-1881), son of a poor farmer from Kodheli of Zadrima . By Mati Kodheli we recognize only the photo that he made his friend , Kole Idromeno in 1880 and from his activity we recognize his participation in Shkodra’s wind orchestra in 1878. In  1885 started to engage in photography  Kolë Idromeno. Although he worked more as a painter , in the  yearbook ( salnamen ) of Shkodra Vilayet was registered as a photographer by profession. In the studio of  Marubi worked the brother of Mati Kodheli, Keli , who after the master's death he inherited the studio and he began freelance work , keeping Marubi surname . Following the declaration of Independence , in Shkodra  gradually increased the number of photographers and studios . Among the photographers that were distinguished are Pjetër Marubi , Kolë Idromeno and Kel Marubi in portrait , Shan Pici in landscape and Dedë Jakova in reportage.
