Cigarette factories during the period of Democracy
The end of the communist
regime in Albania marked the production of cigarettes crisis in the country.
After 1991, the country entered tons of contraband cigarettes and counterfeit
trademarks. Albanian smokers finally got the chance to smoke cigars that were not
made in
Albania, with better taste and usually with small price. Gjirokastra Cigarette
Factory, specialized in the production of cheap cigarettes without filter
"Partizan", was closed almost immediately. Shkodra Cigarette Factory
was closed there since 1996. In 1996, the Albanian - Macedonian businessman Vebi
Velija built a cigarette factory in Prrenjas . "Albania Tabak" which produced
brands like "Veve", "Aurora" and "Partner" ("Partner"
brand was produced with the license of "Makedonija Tabak"). The
factory was closed in 1997 by the police because they had allegedly been
involved in the production of counterfeit cigarettes "L & M".
After several months, the factory was opened again and eventually closed in
2003 due to non - sales market.
